Gillaroo is a Kelsall KSS-46 with the hulls extended 2' (by the designer, Derek Kelsall) and the interior/deck layout modified with blue water cruising in mind. She was built to weight and the hulls are slim so the interior is more the size of a typical 42' production boat. As a result she is faster than the great majority of production cats (though with fixed keels not as fast as a few of the top performers with daggerboards), particularily in light winds. She was completed in 2008 and since then has been doing a 3 year circumnavigation with the owner/builder.
Dimensions: Length: 48’ Beam: 23' Draft: 5' (fixed keels) Weight: 8.5t, with equipment but not stores
Construction: Foam sandwich 3 to 5 layers of 460g Unidirectional glass, Kevlar reinforcement along hull. Isophalic/Orthophalic polyester resin. 20/30mm Polyeurethane foam. Exterior finished in 2-part paint.
Layout:
Hulls - both hulls are the same with: Forward small double cabin, Through head, Corridor with storage cupboards, Large aft double cabin.
The saloon has navigation station to port, saloon table/seating and galley to starboard.
The saloon table is on a raised podium to give good all around visibility and comfortably seats 8. There is good headheight throughout the saloon and the layout has proved to be comfortable during the circumnavigation.
The cockpit has two levels of seating on each side with helm station and double seat to port and cockpit table to starboard. The bimini gives good protection to the helm position in all but strong following winds and the stratoglass windows give good clear visibility. The aft console stretches right across the boat for increased strength and safety (we have never had waves breafing into the cockpit). Mainsheets are ‘Catana’ style with two sheets coming to seperate winches.
Rig: Fractional rig, self tacking jib. Reacher on bowsprit with continuous furler.
Sails: Mainsail – badly worn, Jib – badly worn, Reacher - 2nd hand but good condition, Spinnaker 1 – new Dec 2010, Spinnaker 2 – old and heavily repaired,
Genoa – old monohull sail, we used to use it for reaching before fitting the reacher. Storm jib – unused.
Sheeting/halyards are generally in good condition with several spare sheets on board.
I have had a quote from Rolly Taskers for a new Main and Jib using the current Antal track fittings and battens (which are in good condition) for around US$5,500 plus shipping.

Steering: The steering system is Teleflex Morse cable steering. It is unsound and should be replaced, possible by hydraulic. Will also require a new autopilot and wheel.
